How a baby heartbeat monitor works

Have you ever used a fetal Doppler device before and if so, how was your experience? Did you encounter any difficulties in using the device? I hope you didn’t because using a fetal Doppler is not rocket science and with a little training or experience, you should be able to do it perfectly. I don’t mean that you can be more perfect than your doctor, but you can reach a satisfactory level in your use of the device.

Listening to your baby’s heartbeat for the first time can be an overwhelming feeling of joy and that is exactly why people usually want to do it. Knowing that your baby is safe and kicking is something that everybody wants to do. In this article, I am going to discuss the process that you should use to complete monitoring of your unborn baby’s heartbeat. I am assuming that you have already obtained every supply you need for the process and are ready to just jump in.

Position yourself in the correct posture

Before you start using a Doppler, you will need to ensure that you position your body in a good posture. You need to get your torso in a reclining position and lay back on your backside. If you are sitting on a couch, you can use a pillow to support your back into position. You should do the same if you are laying on a bed. I understand that this process usually makes some people very nervous, especially those that in dire need of a healthy pregnancy without complications, but it is highly advisable to try as much as possible to relax. Take deep breaths if it can help you to relax.

Next, you will need to turn the Doppler device on in readiness to use it. You should be able to hear some static charges on the listening device you have chosen. If you are doing the monitoring alone, you can use headphones. Otherwise, use speakers if there will be another person or people with you. Turning the device on should send some static sound on the listening device which you should be able to hear loud and clear. Adjust the volume of your listening device accordingly.

Lift your shirt and apply the ultrasound gel

If you are wearing a sweater or any other kind of heavy clothing, you will need to remove it and remain with a shirt or something you can lift easily off your belly. You will have to hold and lift your shirt up to expose your belly totally. You should ensure that the shirt doesn’t cause any kind of obstruction and that it doesn’t make any contact with the monitoring device.

Next, you should apply your ultrasound gel generously on your belly. The gel should go to the lower abdomen region.

Try to locate your baby

With the gel in place, you will need to place the Doppler over your belly and start to move it slowly upwards. It will take a minute or two to detect a heartbeat so you should be patient. If you do get the heartbeat, enjoy listening to it and when you are done, clean your Doppler and use a dry piece of cloth to wipe the gel off your belly.
